What is it with little kids and construction trucks? On my blog, Spaceships and Laser Beams, a construction birthday party is one of the most popular themes for boys (and some girls too!). The attraction seems to be immediate – and in the case of my four year old son, Sam, it has been quite obsessive. In fact, skid steer loader was one of his first words!
From cakes to games to favors, with a construction birthday theme there are so many budget-friendly ways to easily take your party decorations to new heights. Here are some of my favorites!
Cool Construction Cakes
A construction themed party lends itself to some very easy cake ideas. You can pile brownies or chocolate chunks and add little construction trucks to look like a construction zone. I once carved a side out of a simple round cake, through the icing, so that the cake was exposed. After adding in a few construction vehicles it looked like the trucks were hard at work assembling the cake.
Construction Party Games and Activities
As for party game ideas? Put them to work! Set up stations where the kids can do fun construction-themed projects. An easy idea I have seen is to create a construction zone with just a mat or laying down brown paper. Then bring in all of the birthday boy’s own construction trucks. The kids can literally play for hours.
If you’re able to go outside, and want some wow, stack empty boxes sky high and rig a “wrecking ball” from a tree using rope and large sponge ball. Both little – and big – guests will love taking turns knocking them all down.
Construction Themed Party Favors
I love it when party favors can pull double duty – and they should be hard at work during a construction party! When little guests arrive, suit them up with a construction hat, vest and gloves. Once the party is over, they can take their wares home with them.
If you’d still rather send kids home with a favor, there are tons of construction-themed books at great prices too. For an edible idea, have sugar cookies made in the shape of construction tools and add them to a miniature toolbox or bucket.
I hope these ideas get you started on building a great kids construction-themed party!
